Brighter Futures, Autumn 2022
News from A Start in Life for the people who make it possible
We support students for as long as they need us. For Em, that meant twelve years, from age eight to a university scholarship of her own.
Every story from the 4-page printed newsletter is written out below, so it reads well on a phone and works with screen readers.

A brighter future
Em's bright future
Support for Em began when her single mother, Jay, was struggling financially. Over twelve years Em earned a place at a selective high school, won Most Improved in Mathematics, coached netball and became a Year 12 prefect. We funded her violin tutoring and music camps along the way, and she has since played at our events to thank supporters.
Em set a goal of an ATAR above 95 and achieved 98.5. She is now studying Commerce, and after winning a university scholarship she asked that our support go to a new student instead.
You've truly played such a major role in where I am today and I will always be so grateful.Em
Student check in
My year so far
Arnold, in Year 4, won a school award for knowing 12 x 12 = 144 and solving it on the board in front of his class. Vee, in Year 7, practised reading aloud three times a week and recorded videos of herself speaking, and was invited to join the Debating Club.
Hal, in Year 9, has found English hard because of an additional learning need, and has learned to "never give up". Tom loves Science experiments, Bunsen burner included.
Annual Prize Giving Ceremony
A day to remember
Nine Sydney students were recognised at the Australian Museum in April, for everything from academic success to humanitarian efforts. Afterwards, families explored a dinosaur Lego exhibit, and four students who met that morning, Arnold, Evan, Theo and Lex, went through it together.
Ella won our Artistic Achievement Prize, Mo the H and M Pope Prize for Excellence in Engineering and IT, and Bea the Lodge Ionic Jubilee Prize for Most Improved Tertiary Studies.
Student outcomes
Mathematics skills to last a lifetime
Bo, in Year 9, set goals to revise regularly and master percentages. Semester 2, 2021 was his best ever, and he won our award for Significant Uplift. His mother told us she cried when she saw he had passed Maths.
Lee, in Year 4, now knows her times tables, adds and subtracts decimals, and reads public transport timetables. Her grandparents are "overjoyed".
